Restoration vs. ExtractionBefore the advent of modern dentistry, extraction was usually regarded as the best, if not only, solution for a painful, severely decayed tooth. Fortunately, with today's amazing advances in dental technology, we are now able to treat and restore diseased teeth, virtually eliminating the need for extraction for most of our patients. It is our belief that a patient's natural teeth must and should be preserved whenever possible. There are enormous advantages to keeping your own teeth. For those who question this wisdom, the only way to truly appreciate the value of tooth restoration is by having a better understanding of the consequences of extraction. The consequences of tooth extraction When a tooth is extracted (or lost as a result of injury), the teeth surrounding it will soon be affected without professional dental care. At first, you may notice that you have more difficulty chewing. Later on, as nearby teeth begin drifting or tilting toward the empty space left behind, you may find that your bite has changed and that you have a tendency to chew more on the opposite side of your mouth. This, in turn, can put undue stress on your jaw joints, possibly causing pain. As time goes by, the teeth that have drifted into the empty space will no longer be aligned, making them more difficult to clean and more susceptible to decay and loss themselves. Finally, the bone that once held your tooth will begin to shrink. With significant bone loss, your facial features may greatly change. Restoration, the better choice If you presently have painful decay and are considering an extraction, please come in for an evaluation and learn how we can relieve your symptoms and restore your tooth. A dental crown restoration is a far more conservative treatment and prevents the complications associated with extraction alone. If you already have missing teeth or if extraction turns out to be your only option, please consult us about tooth replacement. By getting a tooth replacement, such as a bridge or dental implant, as soon as possible, you can avoid the possibility of further tooth loss. With tooth restoration or replacement, you can look forward to a future of healthier teeth and a better appearance.
