Problems with these complex joints can cause chronic facial pain, headaches, and neck aches. Known as TMJ disorder, symptoms may also include a clicking or popping sensation in the joints, soreness in the jaw, and pain around the ears. The exact cause of TMJ disorder is not clearly understood, but it is thought that arthritis, dislocation, injury, stress, and anything that affects the way the teeth fit together are important factors. TMJ disorder is found more often in women of childbearing age than in any other group. TMJ disorder is not easily diagnosed and is sometimes difficult to treat. If you have symptoms, we will first give you a thorough examination and X-rays to rule out other causes. (Facial pain and headaches are often caused by sinus problems, a toothache or periodontal disease.) Once we determine that you have TMJ disorder, we will suggest some conservative treatment options such as exercises, muscle relaxants, or a mouth guard to manage your pain. If these don’t solve the problem, we will be happy to refer you to a specialist for further treatment.
