With immediate care you can avoid the need for far more costly procedures. Though we advise using composite fillings whenever possible, you may prefer amalgam, a controversial yet still reliable option. Amalgam or composite…which is better? Most folks are familiar with amalgam, the shiny metal alloy that has been commonly used by dentists for well over a century. Despite the recent controversy over its mercury content, amalgam is still considered by the American Dental Association to be safe, long-lasting and effective. Because it stands up to heavy chewing pressure, it is often recommended in molars. It is the better choice if you are budget-minded. However, it may not be suitable if you will be bothered by the look of dark metal on your teeth. Composite fillings are a mixture of glass or quartz in a resin, tooth-colored base. They are safe, very durable and can easily withstand moderate chewing pressure. A composite is ideal for small- to medium-size cavities. Though the cost is moderate, it is more expensive than an amalgam. It is the better choice if you want a more natural-looking filling.
