Professional Cleaning

In addition to regular dental exams, you should have your teeth professionally cleaned at least twice a year by a hygienist. Brushing twice a day and flossing can help control plaque, the bacteria-laden film that adheres to your teeth. However, plaque can still build up over time, especially in hard-to-reach places. If it remains, plaque will eventually turn into calculus, or tartar, a hardened substance that can only be removed by a professional.

What happens during cleaning

During the cleaning process, our hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth using a variety of tools. She will look for evidence of gum disease by examining the tissue around your teeth where bacteria can collect and cause inflammation and bleeding, the warning signs of gingivitis. If detection is made early, professional cleaning will usually be enough to restore your healthy gums.

To complete the cleaning process, our hygienist will polish your teeth with a special fluoride paste and follow it with a thorough flossing. At the end of the treatment, your mouth and teeth will feel wonderfully fresh, clean and renewed.
