Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a non-invasive procedure where a color-matched composite resin is permanently affixed to the surface of your natural tooth. Bonding is ideal for problems such as chipped or broken teeth. Most bonding procedures that are done chairside can be completed in just one office visit.

How dental bonding works

Dental bonding begins with the application of a mild etching solution that helps the bonding material adhere to your tooth enamel. We will then apply thin layers of color-matched composite resin to the tooth until it completely fills the area we are correcting. During the process, resin layers will be hardened with a special high-intensity light.

Once the layering is complete, we will sculpt and polish the composite material until we achieve the desired results. By the end of the procedure, you will have a beautiful, perfectly-formed tooth that will be virtually indistinguishable from the rest of your teeth.

Most dental bonding procedures take one to two hours. However, if the problem area is large, it may be necessary to build the composite filling in our laboratory. In that event, we will make an impression (mold) of your teeth during your first appointment and complete the bonding at a follow-up visit.

Important facts about dental bonding

Composite dental bondings are safe, very durable and long-lasting. Although they are color-matched during your procedure, they do not change color with time the same way your natural teeth do. If you have your teeth whitened, a bonded tooth will not be affected by the bleach. In the event color changes make your bonded teeth more noticeable, it may be necessary to have them corrected.

Dental bonding is better suited for problems with individual teeth. It is not an appropriate option if you are looking for a complete smile makeover. In that case, dental veneers may be right for you.
