Your Child's First
Dental Appointment
Visits to the dentist should begin by your child's first
birthday. We can treat your child once he has reached age five. Until
that time, you should see a pediatric specialist who is equipped to treat
younger children. We will be happy to make a referral.
You can prepare your child for his first visit to our office
in a variety of positive ways. Beforehand, you may bring him along on
one of your own dental visits and allow him to meet Dr. English and our
staff. Take time to let him become familiar with the surroundings and
allow him to ask questions. Make his first appointment in the morning
when children are more receptive. Try to arrive early, stay calm and avoid
being rushed. It will help him be more relaxed and confident.
What to expect at the first visit
Your child will find our gentle, caring methods very comforting.
Our first session will be a special time to get to know each other. Dr.
English will do a thorough oral exam of his mouth, gums and teeth. If
necessary, a hygienist will clean his teeth in a child-friendly way and
then show him proper techniques for brushing and flossing.
Following the appointment, we suggest you talk to your
child about the visit and praise him for good behavior. At home, practice
brushing and flossing with him until you're sure he is well-versed.
To ensure your child's dental health, remember to keep
to the recommended schedule of two office visits every year.
